Frequently asked questions
Does Riv ever click things for me?
No. He points — a ring around the control and one short line — then waits for you. If a step is a drag, he draws the arrow. If it's a form or a wizard, he says so and hands over. Your hands stay on the controls, which is also how you actually learn the app.
What can he see?
Only the display you're working on, and only while you're asking. Nothing is captured in the background. Press the key, he looks; let go, he stops.
Which model does he use?
Yours. You bring an OpenAI or Anthropic API key. It lives in your login keychain and your screen goes to the provider you already pay, and nowhere else.
Does my voice leave my Mac?
No. Hold the hotkey and speak — recognition runs on device. Only the text of the question goes to your provider, with the screenshot.
Which Macs does it run on?
macOS 14 or later. It's best on a MacBook with a notch, where Riv lives, but it works on any display. It needs screen recording, accessibility and microphone permissions.
Is it out?
Yes — Riv is in public beta for macOS 14 and later. Download it from the bottom of this page. Expect a few rough edges; it gets better every week, and beta notes go out when something worth knowing ships.
What does it cost?
Nothing while it's in beta. You pay your model provider for what you use, as you already do. Pricing comes later, and beta users will hear about it first.
